Zodiacal releasing is a time-lord technique that turns the chart into a sequence of chapters. Each sign receives a fixed span; its ruler becomes the chronocrator and sets the tone, conditions and quality of the period. The count starts from the Lot of Fortune or the Lot of Spirit, giving two parallel timelines: body and circumstances, action and vocation.
It is not a transit method or an event calendar. It answers not what will happen on a given day but which part of the chart has been given the floor. An event appears where an activated ruler meets a transit, progression or direction.
> In short. Releasing divides life into chapters. L1 lasts 8–30 years and is set by the lot’s sign and its ruler’s minor years; L2 and further levels subdivide it. After 17 years 7 months, a long enough chapter looses the bond and jumps to the opposite sign. Peaks are measured from Fortune; quality from the ruler’s condition.
1. What Zodiacal Releasing Is
In the ancient tradition time was understood as a succession of rulerships. A planet that receives a span becomes a temporary ruler: its nature, place and aspects set the conditions of the period. As rulers succeed one another, they form a sequence of life chapters.
“Releasing” translates an ancient term for setting free. The starting point is released from its sign and travels through the zodiac, giving each sign its own span. The motion is discrete — sign by sign, not degree by degree — and within each sign time is divided into nested levels.
Key terms: lot (a calculated point that sets the topic and starting sign), chronocrator (the planet ruling the active sign) and level (L1 years, L2 months, L3 days, L4 hours).
Releasing does not predict an event or cancel the chart. The chronocrator activates what is promised; the way the period is lived depends on choices. Read L1 first, then L2, then L3.
2. The Two Lots: Fortune and Spirit
A lot is a point built from the Ascendant by measuring the distance between two planets. In a day chart Fortune measures the arc from the Sun to the Moon and projects it from the Ascendant; at night the direction is reversed. Spirit is the mirror image.
| Chart | Lot of Fortune | Lot of Spirit |
|---|---|---|
| Day | ASC + Moon − Sun | ASC + Sun − Moon |
| Night | ASC + Sun − Moon | ASC + Moon − Sun |
All values are degrees of ecliptic longitude, reduced to 0–360°.
Example. Ascendant 12° Gemini (72°), Sun 8° Sagittarius (248°), Moon 22° Leo (142°), day chart. Fortune: 72 + 142 − 248 = −34 → 326°, or 26° Aquarius. Spirit: 72 + 248 − 142 = 178°, or 28° Virgo. Check: 326 + 178 = 504, and 504 − 360 = 144 = 2 × 72.
Fortune concerns the body, health, material conditions and what a person receives independently of intention. It is the lunar line and the “second Ascendant,” from which whole-sign houses are counted.
Spirit concerns the mind, deliberate action, profession and vocation — what a person does by choice. It is the solar line, showing career, social role and personal initiative.
Lots in the same sign. If Fortune and Spirit share a sign, Spirit is moved one sign forward for releasing; the actual position of the lot does not change.
Sect. A day chart has the Sun above the horizon (seventh to twelfth houses from the Ascendant); a night chart has it in the first to sixth. Sect determines the formulas and the reading of benefics and malefics.
Accuracy and convention. Four minutes correspond to roughly 1° of the Ascendant; a lot at 29° can cross into the next sign and change the sequence. Some later texts reverse the Fortune formula (ASC − Moon + Sun by day); do not mix conventions.
3. The Minor Years and the Period Table
The span of a sign is not its ordinal number but the minor years of its ruler — the traditional cycle in which the planet returns to its original relation with the Sun.
| Sign | Ruler | Minor years | Sign | Ruler | Minor years |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Mars | 15 | Libra | Venus | 8 |
| Taurus | Venus | 8 | Scorpio | Mars | 15 |
| Gemini | Mercury | 20 | Sagittarius | Jupiter | 12 |
| Cancer | Moon | 25 | Capricorn | Saturn | 27 |
| Leo | Sun | 19 | Aquarius | Saturn | 30 |
| Virgo | Mercury | 20 | Pisces | Jupiter | 12 |
The twelve spans total 211 years. This is not a “complete human cycle” and not a point at which the method ends; the sequence continues around the wheel. Most lives contain three to five major chapters.
Saturn rules two signs, but Aquarius receives 30 years and Capricorn the reduced 27. This is a stable convention, not an arithmetic error; some software uses 30 for both, which shifts every later boundary.
Three rules are easy to confuse. The span comes from the ruler, not the sign’s number: Aries lasts 15 years, not 1. The total is not 78 years: 78 is the sum of the ordinal numbers. The signs proceed in zodiacal order, not by length: after Pisces comes Aries.
The classical scheme uses a 360-day year: L1 360 days, L2 30 days, L3 2.5 days, L4 5 hours. Each level is twelve times shorter than the one above it.
4. The Releasing Sequence
The count begins at the sign of the lot and proceeds directly through the zodiac: Aries → Taurus → … → Pisces → Aries. A night chart does not reverse the direction; it changes only the lot formulas and the reading of sect.
The first period is not shortened in proportion to the lot’s degree. A lot at 1° and a lot at 29° of the same sign begin the same sequence with the same span. The degree determines the sign, but it does not divide the first period.
Suppose Fortune is in Aquarius and Spirit in Virgo, with the count anchored to 1 December 1980. Fortune: Aquarius 30 (0–30), Pisces 12 (30–42), Aries 15 (42–57), Taurus 8 (57–65). Spirit: Virgo 20 (0–20), Libra 8 (20–28), Scorpio 15 (28–43), Sagittarius 12 (43–55). With 360-day years, Aquarius runs to 27 June 2010, Virgo to 18 August 2000, and Scorpio from 7 July 2008 to 20 April 2023.
The lines move at different rhythms: Fortune changes chapter at 30, 42 and 57, Spirit at 20, 28 and 43. Joint boundaries are rare. A “sudden turning point” often coincides with a change in only one line while the other continues its old theme.
A change of L1 is not an event but a change of field. It can pass unnoticed if the new ruler is weak, and be vivid if it is angular, strong and supported. The boundary date is one coordinate; the ruler’s condition is the other.
5. Nested Periods
Within each chapter, sub-periods begin at the same sign and follow the same zodiacal order, but the minor years are counted in months. In a 20-year Virgo chapter, the first Virgo sub-period lasts 20 months, followed by Libra 8, Scorpio 15, Sagittarius 12, Capricorn 27, Aquarius 30, Pisces 12, Aries 15, Taurus 8, Gemini 20, Cancer 25 and Leo 19. The twelve total 211 months, or 17 years 7 months.
If the chapter is longer than 211 months, a loosing of the bond occurs after the full circuit. If it is shorter, the sub-periods end with the chapter and the last one is cut off.
An example of the opening: Virgo 20 months (1 December 1980–24 July 1982), Libra 8 (24 July 1982–21 March 1983), Scorpio 15 (21 March 1983–13 June 1984), Sagittarius 12 (13 June 1984–8 June 1985), Capricorn 27 (8 June 1985–27 August 1987), Aquarius 30 (27 August 1987–12 February 1990). In a 240-month chapter, 29 months remain after the 211th: Pisces 12, Aries 15 and Taurus 2.
| Level | Unit | Full circuit of 211 units |
|---|---|---|
| L1 | 360 days | 211 years |
| L2 | 30 days | 17 years 7 months |
| L3 | 2.5 days | 527.5 days |
| L4 | 5 hours | about 44 days |
The deeper the level, the more the birth time matters and the less weight the period carries. A four-minute error can shift L3 by days and L4 by hours, so use them only as refinements.
A truncated sub-period is not cancelled, but its theme has less time to unfold; sometimes the visible turn occurs at that seam.
6. The Loosing of the Bond
The loosing of the bond is the most famous and most misunderstood part of releasing. When the sub-period sequence completes a full circuit of 211 units and would return to its starting sign, it instead jumps to the sign opposite the starting sign and continues from there in normal zodiacal order.
Take a 25-year Cancer chapter, or 300 months. The sub-periods run Cancer 25, Leo 19, Virgo 20, Libra 8, Scorpio 15, Sagittarius 12, Capricorn 27, Aquarius 30, Pisces 12, Aries 15, Taurus 8, Gemini 20; the total is 211. After Gemini the sequence jumps to Capricorn, the opposite of Cancer, then Aquarius, Pisces, Aries and Taurus. The chapter ends at 300 months, so Taurus is cut short.
In the Virgo example (240 months), the loosing occurs at month 211, at age 17 years 7 months, on 1 April 1998. It jumps to Pisces, the opposite of Virgo, then Aries 15 and Taurus 2.
A loosing at L2 is possible only in chapters longer than 17 years 7 months: Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Capricorn and Aquarius. The shorter signs end before a full circuit. The loosing always falls on the 211th month from the start of the chapter.
What the loosing is not. It is not “reaching the opposite sign” and not “the first opposition.” It happens when the sequence would close on its starting sign, and the jump goes to the opposite sign.
The loosing is neither good nor bad. It is a change of track: a decision, a move, a change of profession, a break, a crisis or a new project. Its quality is read from the sign of the jump and its ruler; if that sign is angular from Fortune, the loosing may become a peak.
At lower levels the principle repeats: an L3 loosing when L2 exceeds 527.5 days, an L4 loosing when L3 exceeds 44 days.
7. Peak Periods
Peak periods are the moments when releasing lands in signs angular to the Lot of Fortune. Fortune works as a second Ascendant; its angles are the first, fourth, seventh and tenth signs. For releasing these angles matter more than the angles from the Ascendant: they show visibility, activity and a move onto the public stage.
A peak is not necessarily pleasant. It is volume: the theme becomes visible and consequences become tangible. A strong, benefic ruler turns the visibility into success; an afflicted one turns it into conflict, scandal or crisis.
The houses from Fortune read like ordinary whole-sign houses: the first is the body and “I,” the fourth home and roots, the seventh partners and the public, the tenth career and status. The tenth is the main peak; the first is personal activation, the fourth foundation, the seventh partnership.
Example. Fortune is in Aquarius, so the tenth sign from it is Scorpio. The Scorpio chapter of the Spirit line (ages 28–43) is a peak, and its first sub-period, Scorpio for 15 months, makes a double peak. Between 28.0 and 28.5 the Aquarius sub-period of Fortune adds a third angular layer: 7 July 2008–3 January 2009.
Quality depends on the rulers. Scorpio is ruled by Mars; in a day chart Mars is the malefic contrary to sect, so the peak may be bright but contentious. A strong Mars gives a decisive push; an afflicted one gives burnout or a forced change of course.
Conventions. Some count peaks by all four angles from Fortune (the classical reading), some only by the tenth, and some from Spirit. Check what your software is doing before comparing dates.
8. Reading a Period
Reading releasing is not a tour of sign keywords; it is a synthesis of layers.
1. Active periods. Write down L1 and L2 for both lots; add L3 only if needed.
2. Rulers. The ruler of the active sign is the chronocrator. L1 sets the theme; L2 refines the season. If both are the same planet, the theme intensifies.
3. The ruler’s condition. Consider dignity, house, sect, aspects, speed, retrogradation, combustion and angularity. A planet in detriment but angular and supported can act more strongly than one in domicile but cadent.
4. Planets in the sign and in aspect. Planets in the active sign become prominent; squares and oppositions to it create tension. Signs containing the sect benefic, or in hard aspect to it, give the most favourable periods; signs containing the contrary-to-sect malefic give the most difficult ones.
5. Field. Read the sign from Fortune (circumstances, body) and from the Ascendant (the ordinary life area). The tenth from Fortune is public; the sixth from the Ascendant is routine, health and service.
6. The lot’s own house. The house containing the lot colours the whole line: Fortune in the tenth makes it career-driven, in the sixth it concerns health and daily work; Spirit in the fifth directs career toward creativity.
7. The two lines.
| Fortune | Spirit | Synthesis |
|---|---|---|
| angular | angular | culmination: outer conditions and action coincide |
| angular | cadent | outer success without inner support, a “golden cage” |
| cadent | angular | inner or career activity without outer support |
| cadent | cadent | preparation, retreat, reassessment |
8. Formulate a theme, not an event. Good: “The partnership theme is activated through Jupiter in the seventh house; negotiations and a choice between independence and union are likely.” Bad: “You will sign a contract in May.”
9. Timing and the Calendar
The classical calculation uses a 360-day year: twelve signs of 30°, twelve months of 30 days. The civil year is 5.25 days longer, so dates drift backward. Twenty-five 360-day years equal 9,000 days; a period beginning on 1 January 2000 ends on 22 August 2024, about four and a half months before its anniversary.
Some programs use a 365.2422-day year; dates then sit closer to calendar anniversaries, but the proportions of sub-periods differ slightly. Over 25 years the difference is about 131 days. Choose one convention and state it.
Birth time. Four minutes is roughly 1° of the Ascendant. A lot in the last degrees of a sign can cross into the next sign and change the whole grid. With an unknown birth time, use rectification or treat the result as a hypothesis.
Zodiac. The classical tradition uses the tropical zodiac. With a sidereal zodiac the lot signs may shift, and with them the sequence. Use one zodiac consistently.
Precision. L1 is the chapter, L2 the season, L3 the week or month and L4 the day. Releasing alone does not give an exact date; transits, profections, directions or a solar return are needed for that.
10. A Worked Example
Take a schematic chart with Fortune in Aquarius and Spirit in Virgo, anchored to 1 December 1980 and calculated with 360-day years.
1. Fortune, L1. Aquarius 30 — to 27 June 2010; Pisces 12 — to 25 April 2022; Aries 15 — to 5 February 2037. In 2026 the chapter is Aries, ruled by Mars.
2. Spirit, L1. Virgo 20 — to 18 August 2000; Libra 8 — to 7 July 2008; Scorpio 15 — to 20 April 2023; Sagittarius 12 — to 16 February 2035. In 2026 the chapter is Sagittarius, ruled by Jupiter.
3. Sub-periods of Sagittarius. The chapter is 144 months: Sagittarius 12, Capricorn 27, Aquarius 30, Pisces 12, Aries 15, Taurus 8, Gemini 20, Cancer 25, Leo 19. Cancer begins after 124 months, at age 53.33, and is cut to 20 months by the chapter’s end.
4. The loosing. In Virgo (240 months) the loosing falls at month 211, at age 17 years 7 months, on 1 April 1998; then Pisces 12, Aries 15, Taurus 2. Scorpio (180) and Sagittarius (144) are too short.
5. The peak. The tenth sign from Fortune is Scorpio. The Scorpio chapter of Spirit (ages 28–43) is a peak; its first sub-period, Scorpio, makes a double peak. Between 28.0 and 28.5 the Aquarius sub-period of Fortune adds a third angular layer: 7 July 2008–3 January 2009.
6. Synthesis and verification. At 28 Spirit enters Scorpio (Mars) while Fortune remains in Aquarius (Saturn). A strong Mars and a calm Saturn suggest a career breakthrough and public visibility; an afflicted Mars suggests conflict or burnout. Compare the boundaries with five to ten events; if everything misses, check the birth time and formulas.
A night-chart example. Ascendant 10° Libra (190°), Sun 15° Pisces (345°), Moon 5° Cancer (95°). Fortune = 190 + 345 − 95 = 440 → 80°, or 20° Gemini. Spirit = 190 + 95 − 345 = −60 → 300°, or 0° Aquarius. Fortune in Gemini (Mercury, 20 years), Spirit in Aquarius (Saturn, 30 years).
11. Combining with Other Techniques
Releasing works best in combination, but the combination should not become a pile. Three layers are usually enough.
Transits. A transit speaks when its planet is already a chronocrator. Transits to the ruler of the active chapter, hard aspects to it and transits through the active sign are the main triggers; transits to “silent” planets often pass unnoticed.
Profections. The lord of the year reinforces the year when it coincides with the L1 or L2 ruler. A profection into the active sign strengthens the theme; a profection into the opposite sign creates resistance.
Solar returns. An Ascendant, Midheaven or stellium in the active sign makes the year pivotal; the opposite sign can make it a crisis year.
Progressions and directions. The progressed Moon through the active sign deepens involvement; a progressed Ascendant changing sign at a chapter boundary marks a new stage. Directions give dates, releasing the context.
Order. Releasing → profection → transits → solar return and progressions → directions for an exact date.
12. Limits and Common Mistakes
1. Using the sign numbers 1–12 as spans. The minor years are Aries 15, Taurus 8, Gemini 20, etc.
2. Summing to 78 years. 78 is the sum of the ordinal numbers; the minor years total 211.
3. Reversing the sequence in a night chart. Night changes the formulas, not the direction.
4. Swapping Fortune and Spirit. Day: Fortune ASC+Moon−Sun, Spirit ASC+Sun−Moon.
5. Shortening the first period by the lot’s degree. The degree sets the sign, not the length.
6. Placing the loosing at the first opposition. It falls after a full circuit of 211 units.
7. Counting peaks from Spirit instead of Fortune. The classical reference is Fortune.
8. Ignoring the ruler. Dignity, house, aspects and sect all matter.
9. Mixing 360-day and civil years. Dates drift by months.
10. Using L3 or L4 with an uncertain birth time. The finer levels are minute-sensitive.
11. Treating a peak as automatically good. A peak is visibility, not a reward.
12. Ignoring the same-sign rule for the lots. Move Spirit one sign forward.
Limits. Birth-time accuracy is the main one; the method describes themes, not events.
Conventions. Capricorn 27 or 30; moving Spirit or Fortune; peaks by four angles, by the tenth or from Spirit; a 360-day or 365.2422-day year; tropical or sidereal zodiac.
13. Checklist
1. Confirm the birth time and the sect.
2. Compute Fortune and Spirit; check the mirror relation.
3. If the lots share a sign, move Spirit one sign forward.
4. Record the signs and their rulers.
5. Build L1 for both lots.
6. Build L2 and mark the loosing at month 211 for long chapters.
7. Mark the angles from Fortune and identify peaks.
8. Assess the rulers’ condition.
9. Synthesise the two lines.
10. Add the year’s transits and profections; check the conventions.
11. Compare the grid with five to ten known events.
14. Conclusion
Releasing turns a natal chart from a snapshot into a sequence of chapters. Fortune describes what a person receives, Spirit what a person does; their agreements and disagreements are the texture of a biography.
The method is arithmetically simple but demanding: correct lots, correct sect, the minor years rather than sign numbers, direct motion, the loosing of the bond, and the peak as visibility rather than reward. Begin with L1 and L2, add peaks and loosings, and move to L3 only with a reliable birth time.
