The draconic chart is a derived chart in which the North Lunar Node is placed at 0° Aries and every other point is shifted by the same amount. It is popular in karmic astrology, and it is also one of the most frequently miscalculated techniques in modern practice.
This article is a technical guide. It starts with the formula and a worked calculation, then covers angles and houses, reading method, comparison with the tropical natal chart, examples and limits. The karmic language is treated as an interpretive convention, not as an established astronomical fact.
> In short. Draconic longitude equals natal longitude minus the longitude of the North Node, taken modulo 360°. The North Node is always at 0° Aries in the resulting chart, and the South Node at 0° Libra. Aspects and configurations do not change: this is a rigid rotation. Signs, dignities, rulers and — depending on the convention — houses change. The chart does not time events and does not replace the natal chart.
1. Definition and formula
A draconic chart is a derivative of the natal chart in which the zero point is the North Lunar Node rather than the vernal equinox:
λ_d = (λ_n − λ_node) mod 360
Here λ_n is the natal longitude of a point, λ_node is the longitude of the North Node, and λ_d is the draconic longitude. The mod 360 operation brings a negative result back into the 0–360° range by adding 360°.
For example, the Node at 12°34′ Gemini has a longitude of 72.57°. The Sun at 5°20′ Leo has a longitude of 125.33°. Subtracting gives 125.33 − 72.57 = 52.77°, which is 22°46′ Taurus. The North Node automatically falls at 0°00′ Aries and the South Node at 0°00′ Libra.
The name comes from the Latin draco, dragon: the nodes were traditionally called the head and tail of the celestial dragon because eclipses occur near the nodal axis.
A draconic chart:
- is not a snapshot of the sky at another moment — it contains no real planetary positions for the past or the future;
- is not a transit or electional chart — it cannot be used to choose the time of an event;
- is not an independent horoscope — it contains no new aspects or configurations;
- does not replace the natal chart — without the natal chart it loses its context;
- does not prove past lives — the karmic frame remains a metaphor.
If no new aspects appear, what does the method offer? It changes the sign language of the same geometry. A planet that looks fiery and public in the natal chart may look earthy and resource-oriented in the nodal frame. That is a change of description, not the discovery of a new object. The draconic chart is therefore best understood as an interpretive filter, not a second horoscope.
2. The nodal frame
2.1. Tropical, sidereal, draconic
The tropical frame measures signs from the vernal equinox, the sidereal frame from a stellar point with an ayanamsha correction, and the draconic frame from the North Node. The first two use a fixed zero; the third uses a moving one. The Node’s mean motion is retrograde, with a circuit of about 18.6 years, so the chart is tied to the Node’s position at birth rather than being a permanent “map of the soul.”
2.2. The North Node at 0° Aries
The North Node is the point where the Moon crosses the ecliptic moving south to north. The South Node is the opposite point. The axis is always diametrical: if the North Node is at 0° Aries, the South Node is at 0° Libra.
Placing the Node at 0° Aries symbolically aligns the nodal axis with the equinoctial axis. Technically it is simply a choice of origin: no physical conjunction between the Node and the vernal point occurs.
2.3. A rigid rotation
Because every longitude is reduced by the same constant, the method is a rigid rotation.
Preserved: all longitude differences and therefore all aspects and orbs; configurations; the order of planets around the circle; midpoints; retrograde status; ecliptic latitudes.
Changed: the sign and degree of every point; dignities defined by sign; sign rulers (and house rulers under rotation); house placement — but only under one of the conventions; antiscia and contra-antiscia, which are defined by reflection across the 0° Cancer–0° Capricorn axis and are not preserved by the rotation.
Unchanged, despite claims to the contrary: the aspect grid. If the Sun squares Mars natally, it still squares Mars in the draconic chart; only the sign changes. A rigid rotation cannot create or destroy an aspect. A “new” grand trine means an error in calculation or a different derivative chart.
3. Calculation
3.1. The algorithm
1. Convert every natal point to absolute longitude from 0° Aries: 5°20′ Leo = 120 + 5 + 20/60 = 125.333°.
2. Determine the longitude of the North Node and decide whether it is the true or the mean Node.
3. Subtract the Node’s longitude from every longitude.
4. If the result is negative, add 360°.
5. Convert back to sign and degree: the whole-number part of the division by 30 gives the sign, and the remainder gives the degree within that sign.
6. Recalculate the angles and cusps separately if you use a full rotation.
7. Check that the North Node is at 0° Aries and the South Node at 0° Libra.
3.2. Node type and birth-time precision
The mean Node is a smoothed point: always retrograde, moving uniformly at about 19.4° per year. The true Node is the actual intersection of the orbits; it oscillates around the mean position, slows down, and can change direction over short intervals. The difference can reach about 1.5°, so when comparing charts or programs, check the node type first. Mixing them produces a systematic error that matters for exact aspects and points near a sign boundary.
The Node moves about 3.2′ per day, so birth time barely affects the draconic offset. The angles are different: the ASC and MC are sensitive to minutes. With an uncertain birth time, calculate the draconic planets, but read the draconic angles with caution.
3.3. A quick sign rule
Let d be the Node’s longitude, q = floor(d/30), and r = d mod 30. The sign moves back by q signs; if the natal degree is less than r, it moves back one more sign. The draconic degree is (natal degree − r) mod 30. For the Node at 12°34′ Gemini (q = 2, r = 12.57°), the Sun at 5°20′ Leo becomes 22°46′ Taurus, and the Moon at 21°48′ Scorpio becomes 9°14′ Virgo.
3.4. Worked example
A sample chart. The North Node is at 12°34′ Gemini (true Node), absolute longitude 72.567°.
| Point | Natal longitude | Absolute | Draconic longitude | Draconic position | House (rotation) | House (overlay) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sun | 5°20′ Leo | 125.333° | 52.767° | 22°46′ Taurus | 10 | 8 |
| Moon | 21°48′ Scorpio | 231.800° | 159.233° | 9°14′ Virgo | 2 | 11 |
| Mercury | 29°05′ Cancer | 119.083° | 46.517° | 16°31′ Taurus | 10 | 7 |
| Venus | 17°12′ Virgo | 167.200° | 94.633° | 4°38′ Cancer | 11 | 9 |
| Mars | 2°40′ Taurus | 32.667° | 320.100° | 20°06′ Aquarius | 7 | 4 |
| Jupiter | 8°15′ Aquarius | 308.250° | 235.683° | 25°41′ Scorpio | 4 | 2 |
| Saturn | 24°50′ Pisces | 354.833° | 282.267° | 12°16′ Capricorn | 6 | 3 |
| ASC | 18°40′ Libra | 198.667° | 126.100° | 6°06′ Leo | 1 | — |
| MC | 22°05′ Cancer | 112.083° | 39.517° | 9°31′ Taurus | 10 | — |
Manual check: 125.333 − 72.567 = 52.767, one whole sign (Taurus) plus 22.767°, i.e. 22°46′ Taurus. For Mars, add 360° first: 32.667 − 72.567 + 360 = 320.100°, i.e. 20°06′ Aquarius. The “rotation” column keeps the houses because the cusps move with the planets; the “overlay” column places the draconic planets in the fixed natal houses of a quadrant system. Do not mix the two.
3.5. Checks
1. Nodal check. The North Node must be at 0° Aries and the South Node at 0° Libra.
2. Aspect check. The Sun at 125.333° and Mars at 32.667° form a square with a 2.667° orb; in the draconic chart, 52.767° and 320.100° give 267.333°, the same square.
3. House check. Under rotation the houses are identical; under overlay they change.
4. Angles and houses
4.1. Three conventions
A. Full rotation. Planets, angles and cusps are all reduced by the Node’s longitude. Houses stay the same because the grid rotates with the planets; only the signs change. This is the most internally consistent version of the draconic chart as a chart.
B. Overlay on natal houses. The natal angles and cusps stay fixed, and the draconic planets are projected into the natal grid. Both signs and houses change; this is the “draconic planets in natal houses” technique.
C. Whole-sign houses from the draconic ASC. The draconic ASC begins the first house, and the remaining houses are counted in whole signs. With a whole-sign natal chart the result matches A; with a quadrant system it is a hybrid.
Choose the convention in advance and do not mix it with another.
4.2. Draconic ASC and MC
ASC_d = (ASC_n − d) mod 360, MC_d = (MC_n − d) mod 360. The angular distance between them is preserved because both points are shifted by the same amount.
However, rotating ecliptic longitudes by a constant does not correspond to a real rotation of the celestial sphere. The actual ASC and MC are tied to the horizon and meridian of a place, and their separation depends on latitude and time. After the arithmetic shift, the pair ASC_d and MC_d may not correspond to any real horizon and meridian. They are symbolic points, not astronomically valid angles.
4.3. Chart ruler and cusps
If the ASC changes sign, its ruler changes too: the natal Libra ASC is ruled by Venus, the draconic Leo ASC by the Sun at 22°46′ Taurus in the eighth natal house under the overlay. The chain “vehicle → ruler → sphere” is useful for a narrative, but the ruler’s aspects remain natal. Under a full rotation, recalculate all cusps; under an overlay, leave them alone and call the result an overlay.
5. Reading the chart
5.1. Order of analysis
1. The natal chart. Luminaries, angles, the ASC ruler, dominant elements and modes.
2. The natal Node. Sign, house and aspects. This is the axis of the whole frame.
3. The draconic Sun and Moon. Sign, house (with the convention stated) and aspects.
4. The draconic ASC and its ruler.
5. Sign changes in the remaining planets.
6. Cross-aspects between different bodies in the draconic and natal charts, with tight orbs.
7. Synthesis. A hypothesis for discussion, not a verdict.
5.2. Luminaries and planets
| Point | Natal question | Draconic question |
|---|---|---|
| Sun | What role do I play and how do I express myself | Which identity feels older |
| Moon | Which emotional habit has formed | Which instinct runs automatically |
| Mercury | How did I learn to think and speak | Which thinking style is my default |
| Venus | What do I value and how do I relate | What do I attract at a deeper level |
| Mars | How do I pursue what I want | Which energy switches on instinctively |
| Jupiter | What do I believe and how do I expand | Which faith is inherited |
| Saturn | Where are my limits and discipline | Which fear or prohibition is inherited |
| ASC | How do I enter the world | How am I seen before I explain myself |
| MC | What is my social role | Which vocation feels like mine |
In the karmic frame, the draconic Sun is the “background identity”: not the social role, but the way of being that feels less dependent on expectation. The sign shows the style; the house shows the area where it seeks expression under the overlay. Its aspects are the natal Sun’s aspects — if the natal Sun squares Saturn, the draconic Sun also squares Saturn; only the sign colouring changes.
The draconic Moon describes emotional “memory,” while Mercury, Venus and Mars describe acquired ways of thinking, valuing and acting; compare their element and mode. Jupiter and Saturn read as inherited faith and inherited limit.
5.3. Outer planets
Uranus, Neptune and Pluto move slowly, but their draconic positions depend on the Node, which shifts about 19.4° per year. Their draconic signs are therefore largely generational; read them only when they are angular, conjunct a personal planet, or ruling the draconic ASC.
6. Comparison with the tropical natal chart
6.1. Summary table
| Parameter | Natal chart | Draconic chart |
|---|---|---|
| Zero point | 0° Aries = vernal equinox | 0° Aries = North Node |
| Frame | Seasonal | Nodal |
| Planets | Real positions at birth | Natal positions minus the Node |
| Aspects | Actual | Identical |
| Configurations | Actual | Identical |
| Signs | Actual | Shifted |
| Dignities and rulers | Actual | Shifted |
| Houses | Actual | Identical under rotation; changed under overlay |
| Angles | Real | Shifted, symbolic |
| Forecasting | Transits, progressions, directions | Symbolic frame only |
6.2. The “same sign” trap
A popular rule says a planet remaining in the same sign shows continuity, while a sign change shows transformation. The arithmetic makes this suspect. Under a shift of d, every planet moves back by q whole signs and some move back one more. If the Node is not in Aries, q is greater than zero, and no planet can remain in its natal sign. A “same sign” result is possible only when the Node is in Aries (q = 0) and the planet’s degree is at least the remainder r. A sign change is therefore the norm, not a marker of transformation; a chart where most planets keep their signs is an arithmetic error.
6.3. Cross-aspects
Cross-aspects are the only place where genuinely new angular relationships appear. But D_p − N_p = −d for every planet: the cross-aspect of a planet to itself is the same for all planets. Listing those pairs as separate “karmic aspects” is meaningless — it is one value repeated ten times.
Only cross-aspects between different bodies are substantive: draconic Sun to natal Moon, draconic Venus to natal Mars, draconic ASC to natal Saturn. Use tight orbs: 1–3° for conjunctions and oppositions to luminaries and angles, 1–2° for the rest.
7. Examples
7.1. Full analysis
Return to the chart in section 3.4: the Node is at 12°34′ Gemini, a shift of 72.567°. Under full rotation the Sun is at 22°46′ Taurus, the Moon at 9°14′ Virgo, Mercury at 16°31′ Taurus, Venus at 4°38′ Cancer, Mars at 20°06′ Aquarius, Jupiter at 25°41′ Scorpio, Saturn at 12°16′ Capricorn, the ASC at 6°06′ Leo and the MC at 9°31′ Taurus; the houses are unchanged. Under the overlay the planets are the same, but the houses change: Sun eighth, Moon eleventh, Mercury seventh, Venus ninth, Mars fourth, Jupiter second, Saturn third.
The natal Sun in Leo in the tenth describes someone for whom visibility and recognition matter. The draconic Sun in Taurus in the eighth (overlay) suggests a motivation rooted less in publicity and more in stability, resources, intimacy and transformation. This does not make the second description the “real” one; it gives the person two descriptions of the same will.
The natal Moon in Scorpio in the second speaks of an intense emotional relationship with resources; the draconic Moon in Virgo in the eleventh shifts the emphasis to analysis and belonging to a group. The natal Libra ASC is diplomatic, the draconic Leo ASC more expressive; the ruler of the draconic ASC is the Sun at 22°46′ Taurus in the eighth natal house.
Aspects. The Sun square Mars (2.7°), the Sun opposition Jupiter (2.9°) and the Moon trine Saturn (3.0°) survive the rotation. The Moon–Saturn trine changes from water (Scorpio–Pisces) to earth (Virgo–Capricorn): the same aspect, a different colour. These are hypotheses, not forecasts.
7.2. Edge cases
If the North Node is at 0°00′ Aries, d = 0 and the draconic chart equals the natal chart. At 0°30′ Aries the shift is only 0.5°, so almost every planet stays in its sign. At 29°55′ Pisces the longitude is 359.917°, and subtracting it is equivalent to adding 0.083°: the chart is almost identical to the natal one even though the Node is at the end of the zodiac. At 0° Libra every point moves six signs, into the opposite sign.
7.3. Spectrum of shifts
| Node position | Longitude | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| 0° Aries | 0° | Identity |
| 15° Aries | 15° | 0–1 sign back |
| 0° Cancer | 90° | 3 signs back |
| 0° Libra | 180° | 6 signs, all opposite |
| 0° Capricorn | 270° | 9 signs back = 3 forward |
| 29°55′ Pisces | 359.917° | Near 0°, almost identity |
7.4. Draconic synastry
Person A has the Node at 12°34′ Gemini and draconic Venus at 4°38′ Cancer. Person B has the Node at 3°20′ Scorpio (213.333°) and natal Mars at 7°58′ Aquarius (307.967°). B’s draconic Mars is 307.967 − 213.333 = 94.633°, i.e. 4°38′ Cancer — an exact conjunction with A’s draconic Venus. In the natal synastry, the same Venus and Mars are 140°46′ apart, not an exact major aspect. The draconic frame creates a contact the natal chart does not show, but it depends on both Nodes: with B’s mean Node the position can shift by a degree or more and the conjunction disappears. Treat this as an additional layer, not a verdict.
8. Synastry, transits and limits
Begin with natal synastry and use the draconic chart as a second layer: prioritise conjunctions and oppositions to luminaries, angles and ASC rulers, with orbs of 1–2° and at most 3° for the luminaries. The chart is static; “draconic transits” are ordinary transits to shifted points. Distinguish a transiting planet to the draconic chart from the draconic position of a transiting planet (current position minus the natal Node longitude). The Node returns every 18.6 years, but that does not change the chart; the chart does not time events.
9. Common mistakes
1. Subtracting degrees within a sign instead of using absolute longitude. You cannot subtract “12° from 5° Leo”; convert both points to absolute longitude first.
2. Using the wrong direction. Draconic longitude is natal longitude minus the Node. The Node’s retrograde motion does not change the formula.
3. Using the South Node instead of the North Node. This produces a 180° shift and a different chart.
4. Forgetting the 360° wrap. A negative result must be brought back into the 0–360° range.
5. Mixing true and mean Nodes. A difference of up to 1.5° can destroy an exact cross-aspect.
6. Expecting new aspects. A rigid rotation neither creates nor destroys aspects.
7. Reading the draconic Node by sign. It is always at 0° Aries, and the South Node at 0° Libra.
8. Claiming a planet “stayed in the same sign.” With the Node outside Aries this is arithmetically impossible for all planets.
9. Mixing house conventions. Rotation preserves houses; overlay changes them.
10. Transferring natal dignities automatically. The planet is in a different sign, so its dignity must be reassessed.
11. Using wide orbs for cross-aspects. Orbs of 5–8° in a two-chart comparison produce near-random hits.
10. Checklist
- [ ] The node type is stated: true or mean.
- [ ] All points are converted to absolute longitude.
- [ ] The shift is subtracted modulo 360°.
- [ ] The North Node is checked at 0° Aries and the South Node at 0° Libra.
- [ ] Two or three aspects are checked for preservation.
- [ ] The house convention is stated: rotation or overlay.
- [ ] Cusps are recalculated if rotation is used.
- [ ] Cross-aspects are calculated only between different bodies.
- [ ] Conclusions are framed as hypotheses, not facts.
11. Conclusion
The draconic chart is a useful but limited instrument. It shows familiar geometry in a different sign language, but it adds no new aspects and has no temporal mechanism of its own. It is not a second horoscope; it is a filter for reading the first one.
